Peer-to-Peer Networks

In Peer-to-Peer networks all the computers on the network work at the same efficiency level, and users have direct access to the other computers and the peripherals attached to the network. Peer-to-Peer networks are less expensive and less complicated to execute then client-server networks, and there is not a central server.
Peer-to-Peer networks are used by users accessing files on a peer computer’s hard drive and other devices that have been designated as shared devices, such as a printer. Internet peer-to-peer computing is another way to exchange data via the internet. Content is exchanged over the internet directly with other users of the peer-to-peer network. Internet P2P networking is very commonly used for exchange of music, which is often illegal because of copyright issues. But there are P2P file sharing sites that are legal.
I have not used peer-to-peer networks because I know that music file sharing is illegal and I do not need to share other files with others from my computer’s hard drive.
Yes I have downloaded music using iTunes Music Store, it is easier to download a couple songs off of an album you like rather than buying the entire CD and realizing you don’t like half of the songs on it.
The use of these types of networks to share some types of files illegal is because of money and copyrighted data, such as music or movies. Artists claim that they are not being paid rightfully when user’s share files without the consent of the artist. Meaning why should they purchase our work if they can get it for free by file sharing. I believe that the government intervention in this type of activity was needed because it is unfair to the artist that only one person would have to purchase their music while thousands could listen to it for free once it was uploaded.
The University requires that all students remove any peer-to-peer file sharing programs so that there is no legal liability as well as slowing down internet access for all students, and lowers the probability of viruses.

Web-Based Storage or photo site/photo sharing site

Photobucket

The name of the web-based photo storage and photo sharing site I chose is Photobucket. The type of storage is photo and video storage as well as a sharing site. It was founded in 2003 by Alex Welch and Darren Crystal and acquired by Fox Interactive Media, Inc. in 2007. There is no cost; it is a free photo storage and sharing site. In order to use this web site all you have to do is create a user name and password, and then upload your pictures.

There are many pros to using web-based storage such as less memory used up on your computer, being able to delete your memory card without losing your pictures, and having easy access to your photos where ever internet access is available. Two reasons why I would use a web-based storage site would be to free up memory space on my computer to help it run faster, and to be able to upload pictures easier to my facebook.com or myspace.com.

A few cons in using web-based photo storage are that: anyone has access to and can view your photos, whether you know them or not, and if someone figures out your password they are able to make changes to your account and delete pictures. Two reasons why I would not use a web-based photo storage is because I would be concerned with who is viewing my photos and also the risk of losing pictures due to deleting by a person who found my password.

Computer-Oriented Society

Risks of a Computer-Oriented Society

The differences in online communication are a huge problem associated with a computer-oriented society. All of the newer and “faster” ways in which everyone communicates today create many problems and confusion. Today our society uses text messaging in place of phone calls, and e-mail as a replacement for letters, both of which lack proper language as well as emotion.
Because of online communication not only is it faster to get information to one another it is also easier to misspell words, use less formal language, and leaves the other person to interpret the lack of emotion. In an office setting it is much easier to send out a memo versus calling or sending out letters to all of your colleagues. But proper language must be used to remain professional, which can often be lost when someone is typing a quick message. Be careful when using capital letters, because it can come off as shouting. Also when in a business setting never use acronyms because it is not considered proper language and may come off as unprofessional.

Searching the Web

When searching the web I like to use Google.

I searched for Verizon Wireless in the Google search engine. I received 22,500,000 hits, and used the first choice available: http://www.verizonwireless.com. Most of the other hits were not relevant to the topic of my search because they were about billing or adding a line. Although it is commercial, I was able to find the information needed to create my website scavenger hunt.

To narrow my search I could type in "information about Verizon Wireless". When I tried this narrowing subject I received 12,900,000 hits and my first choice from the other search was still available and the first hit. When using this new narrowed topic I received more irrelevant subjects than my broader topic that was first used.
